Regan's 1st day

Regan was so excited about going back to school! He has been wanting to wear his backpack just about all Summer long because he knew that meant going to school. Finally this morning he got to put it on and was so happy.

Ricky, Kollyn and I took him to school and after sitting in the mess of traffic we finally got parked. Regan walked into school just as big as could be. All the teachers on the hall remembered him from last year every door we passed we heard "Hey Regan!", "Have a good year Regan" "Where's my hug?" and of course " Roll Tide Regan." It made it so special for me to know that he was remembered and cared about by the teachers and staff.

One of the ladies stopped us to get her hug and she told Regan that he would be in the class with Mrs. Wills, the aide that I have wanted for two years, sure enough we walk in and she is standing behind Regan's seat waiting on him! I about lost it right then. I have been so worried about him being in class without someone who "knew" him. Mrs.Wills has been around Regan for the last two years while she has been with another student so she knew how to interact with him and how to handle him. I guess you can say she was an answer to a much prayed prayer!

Regan went in and found his seat he sat down and was ready to play with the playdoh that was on the table. He never hesitated to just get right into working mode. It was wonderful!!

When we were leaving I had to ask for a hug but Regan had to make sure he hugged Kollyn before we left. B a hug!! Such a sweet brother! When we got him this afternoon the first thing he said was Hey B!

It seems like he had a great day. He was in such a good mood all afternoon and evening. This year looks like it could be a great year!!

Last year to preschool Regan rode the special needs bus. He was the last person picked up and the first to get off the bus. So he had a very short ride since we live about a mile from the school. We wanted to let him ride the bus and he loved it. We set up in his IEP that he would be riding the bus again this year. But, When I got the phone call Friday afternoon from his new driver we were told his pick up time was 6am and drop off time would be 430pm!!!!! Ricky and I could not see him being gone 10+ hours for school and decided that he would just be a car rider! I know he will miss riding the bus but it's just not going to work. I miss him too much already for him to be gone 10 hours! The driver and I talked again today and she said she completely understood where we were coming from and she wished she could do something different but her hand were tied by the transportation department. Maybe next year we can try that again.

This blog will be all about Regan's first year of school. For those who are new to our little guy let me introduce you!

This is our little guy that was born with 47 chromosomes also known as DOWN SYNDROME. He is starting school with no aide in a typical kindergarten class! Which sounds great but my hubby and I do believe this will change fairly quickly for lots of reasons. Here are a few:

1. Regan has limited speech he signs 150+ signs. His teacher tells me she knows none.
2. Regan is not 100% potty trained after 3 years of trying!
3. Regan does things Regan wants to do and occasionally what anyone else wants

I am so excited to see what this year will bring for Regan and I hope to keep you all updated on his year!!
